Handpainted "The Swing" Based on a painting by Jean-Honoré Fragonard, the artist’s most famous painting is one of Rococo’s masterpieces.
According to the memoirs of playwright Charles Colle, a courtier asked Gabriel Francois Doyen to make a painting of him and his lover. However, Doyen considered the offer frivolous and rejected it. He recommended Fragonard to the courtier. The client wanted a painting of a lady sitting on a swing pushed by a bishop. However, instead of a bishop, Fragonard painted an average man on the picture.
The swing 's first known owner was M.-F. Ménage de Pressigny, who died in 1794. The work was later awarded to the brand of Razins de Saint-Marc. After his death in 1865, Richard Seymour-Conway, lord of Hertford, founder of the Wallace Collection, bought it at an auction.
The painting is in the Wallace Collection in London today.
